“Genealogy? HELP!” Thursdays 3-5 pm

Interested in starting your family tree, but not sure where to begin?  Stuck trying to fill in some lineage and not sure how?  Bring your questions and challenges for free, one-on-one family history research and genealogy assistance, provided by a Madison County Genealogical Society volunteer.  No registration required – just stop by the library’s Genealogy section to take advantage of this new drop-in service beginning Thursday, January 11, 2018.

 

Programs for 2018 First Quarter Announced

The MCGS is lining up interesting and informative programs for the coming year.  Look for posters around town, at libraries throughout Madison County, and on various Facebook pages.  We hope you will come.  Programs begin at 7:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month at the Winterset Public Library meeting room (unless otherwise indicated.)

December 5 – Christmas Time to Share

Bring a finger food and your best 2017 genealogy story to share at our relaxed end-of-year party.  2018 officers will be elected during our short business meeting.

November 7 – Daughters of the American Revolution

Program by Jennifer Ewing, former Iowa Genealogical Society Executive Director

Are you a son or daughter of a Revolutionary War ancestor?  Here is your chance to learn how to find out and about the Daughters of the American Revolution – its history, significance, and the process to join.

October 3 – Genealogy Jeopardy!

Jared McDonald, Director of the Madison County Historical Museum, will host a fun evening of friendly competition with our own local version of the Jeopardy! game show.

Test your knowledge of genealogy basics and local history.  Share what you know as well as learn something new. Teams will be formed for some old fashioned FUN.

Please plan to attend these informative programs.  Guests are most welcome to attend along with MCGS members.  Business meetings are held after the program for those who would like to stay and see what the Genealogical Society is all about.

September 5 – Madison County and WWI

MCGS member Linda Smith will provide an overview of WWI events related to Madison County citizens both on the war front and home front.  We are meeting at the Madison County Historical Museum at 815 S. 2nd Ave, Winterset, so that we can take in their special showcase of WWI memorabilia – uniform, soldier’s kit, and much more.

August 1 – DNA Basics

Theresa Liewer, Iowa Genealogical Society instructor, will explain DNA basics in her usual practical approach.  Which test is best?  What can be done with the results?  Will it help me find relatives?  Whether you’ve had your DNA tested or are thinking about it, this program will give insight into the process and usefulness of DNA testing.
