Genetic Genealogy Workshop – Saturday, August 11, 8:30 am – 4 pm
The Madison County Genealogical Society has been given a unique opportunity by Winterset alum, MCGS member, and DNA enthusiast Glenn York . He has arranged to visit from Colorado to teach us how genetic information can further your family research.
Glenn contacted us months ago with the proposal that he would take a road trip back to his roots in Madison County and put on a class as a fund-raiser for the Madison County Genealogical Society. Since retirement, Glenn has concentrated his time in studying DNA as it pertains to genealogy. He has attended conferences, hangs out with the “big names,” and won awards. For a recent award, see Jimmy B. Parker Scholarship Awarded for SLIG 2019.
This workshop will cover the basics of DNA and beyond in four sessions. Perhaps you’ve been wondering if you should take a DNA test, but are unsure with all the various options and possible security concerns. Or maybe you have taken the test and looked over your ethnicity chart eagerly, but are unsure as to what are the next steps to use the information to find family members. Then you are the perfect candidate for this class.
The cost is $40 for any or all four sessions and lunch is on your own. Some treats are planned for the morning and afternoon breaks. You can register online or at the Winterset Public Library front desk. You can also leave your check there or mail it to the Library (123 N 2nd St, Winterset, 50273).
Glenn has even offered to meet with a group of MCGS members on Friday, August 10, if you would like to spend more time talking through your DNA results. If you are interested in meeting with him on Friday, please reply to this email to let me know so I can work on scheduling.
If you are curious about DNA tests and genetic genealogy, I hope you will take advantage of this rare opportunity to work with someone “in the know” right in Madison County. The attached brochure gives you detailed information on the content of the workshop sessions and registration.
