Celebrate America250 with Earlham Cemetery Walk

In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the Madison County Genealogical Society (MCGS) is holding three cemetery walks across the county throughout 2026. Our next one will be held September 4 in the Earlham Cemetery. During the cemetery walk, a short biography of eight individuals will be read, each with a family connection to an American Revolutionary War ancestor as well as deep roots in the Earlham area.
The idea for the cemetery walks came from the Jean Marie Cardinell chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Des Moines. Several MCGS members are also members of this chapter and are “Daughters,” which means that each one has at least one documented ancestor who served in the American Revolutionary War. This DAR chapter encouraged members to hold community events to celebrate Amercia250. Our local Daughters had past experiences with cemetery walks across the county, so decided to observe this special year in that same way.
The paths chosen are in the northeast sections of the cemetery. Walks are short, but sturdy walking shoes are suggested. Walking sticks are always helpful. You may want to carry a light chair between readings. The presentation will be no longer than one hour and a sound system will be used.
This walk is part of the Bricker-Price fall Senior Speakers Series. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be held within the Bricker-Price Block building.
