January 2021 – Time to Join the MCGS or Renew Your Membership

Each January, the Madison County Genealogical Society asks our annual members to renew and hope that some of you will join for the first time.
Since our monthly meetings and programs (when we are able to have them once again) are open to the public, what do you receive for your dues?
  1. An 8-page quarterly newsletter filled with Madison County news and helpful genealogy tips.
  2. The satisfaction of knowing you support the MCGS as it provides money to help digitize newspapers, have ancestry.com available in the Winterset Library, assist with gravestone restorations, etc.

Past Newsletters Now Available Online

Three years of past MCGS quarterly newsletters are available here.  Begin by clicking the RESEACH tab at the top of the page.  On that page, you will see a link to take you to the newsletters.  Once there, you can view, download, or print the posted newsletters.

You will find the four 8-page newsletters written in 2015. 2016, and 2017.  As current newsletters are created, another two-year old newsletter will be posted.  More current newsletters for 2018 and 2019 are not posted yet since receiving the latest news is a perk for current members.

If you are a current member and are missing any 2018 or 2019 newsletters, just let us know, using the CONTACT US tab.

Hail, Hail to a Grand Year of Genealogy

On Tuesday, December 3, the MCGS held their annual Christmas Party.  We shared a treat or two, made plans for the coming year, and discussedour best genealogy story of the year.  A great time was had by all.

UPDATE – November 5

UPDATE – Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Madison County Genealogical Society meeting will be held at the Winterset Public Library rather than at the Madison County Annex. Tonight, there will NOT be a program, but only a meeting. Look for a tour of the Recorder’s Office to be a program in 2020.

The family farm represents the traditions and heritage upon which our families and the state were built. Jared McDonald will present resources to gather farmland history, using online sources to view historic maps and photos.

October 2 – Heritage and Century Farms

The Heritage and Century Farm Programs, administered by the State Secretary of Agriculture and the Iowa Farm Bureau Foundation, honor those families that have owned farmland for 150 and 100 years, respectively. Members will explain the significance of the programs and the simple steps to honor your farming legacy.
