This website contains all of the available Madison County Courthouse records directly related to genealogy (births, marriages, deaths and burials). Births and marriages are not posted if newer than 100 years. Deaths and burials are posted soon after the event. Over 34,600 obituaries are available.

In addition to the county records, you will find transcriptions of every Federal Census from 1850 through 1930 and every Iowa State Census from 1849 through 1895, plus 1925. Check out the menu down the left side of the homepage for more Madison County information.

One link on the right side of the homepage will take you to IowaGravestones.org, where very existing Madison County gravestone has been photographed and posted. A local team is dedicated to photographing new burials as they occur. To date, over 40,000 Madison County gravestone photos have been posted.

Free Genealogy Forms

The following forms are available for you to view, download, or print.

Family Group Sheet – This form can be filled out for a single family unit – husband, wife, and children. If there is a second marriage, then that family goes on its own Family Group Sheet. This form is a great way to organize your genealogical finds. All censuses, photos, vital records, etc. related to the same family can go in a folder with the associated Family Group Sheet.
5-Generation Chart – This chart provides space to record your vital dates plus four generations of your ancestors. It’s a quick way to show your closest connections. Or start with an ancestor and fill in his/her previous four generations.
Research Checklist – This link takes you to the Research Checklist provided by the Midwest Genealogy Center in Lee Summit, Missouri. Use it to note what information you have on hand and what is missing that might answer your questions about your ancestor.
